Best paper award at Body Sensor Network 2010

The Dr. Ahmed Elsaify Memorial Award for Best Paper at the recent Body Sensor Network 2010 (BSN2010) Conference in Singapore was awarded to a paper written by CLARITY researchers including Kim Lau (pictured above with the award), a postdoctoral researcher working as part of Professor Dermot Diamond’s team in DCU.

“Development of Bite Guard for Wireless Monitoring of Bruxism Using Pressure-Sensitive Polymer” describes how a wireless pressure sensing bite guard has been developed for monitoring the progress of bruxism (teeth grinding during sleep); as well as protecting the teeth from damages. A pressure sensitive polymer composite, safe for intra oral applications was made and also included an in-house built microcontroller-based electronic circuit for data collection and transmission.

Body sensor networks (BSN) technology has gained tremendous international interest in recent years from researchers both in academia and industry. With the development of innovative wearable/wireless/implantable biosensors, the applications for BSNs extend from in-vivo monitoring and intervention to everyday healthcare, as well as fitness, sport and security. This conference addressed the fast-growing BSN research field, and offers participants a unique forum to discuss the key issues and innovative solutions in current BSN research.
